PTax98 is a Perl script using the Tk.pm module. It computes the federal tax form 1040EZ for tax year 1998. My motive in writing it was to learn Perl/Tk and to (hopefully) inspire some real programmers to try a tax package for Linux and other Unix-ish OS's.
Jay Scherrer has written an improved and updated Ptax for 2001 which creates PDF output suitable for printing and submitting to the IRS! It requires PDF::Create as well as Tk.pm. Information and downloads for Ptax2001 are available at http://jay.scherrer.com/Ptax2001.html.
Another, rather ambitious, project called gnuTaxes appears to have stalled, but is still posted on SourceForge for those who might like to pitch in.
